Language learning journey
Learning languages may often feel a bit hard or slow. However, there are some tips and tricks on how to improve your learning. In this blogpost I will share some of the tricks that have helped me with learning languages.
Movies and series have always interested me ever since I was little. When I was very young, I remember watching some movies and series from Youtube, since my family didn’t have any streaming services. Unfortunately, there was not Finnish subtitles available. At the time, it was a bit of a drawback because I barely knew any English. I didn’t let that stop me though, and so I watched everything in English or with English subtitles. As time went by, I noticed that I could more and more understand the language. Watching movies actually made me learn a language. Nowadays I have Netflix and could use the Finnish subtitles, but it has become a habit for me to use the English subtitles. By constantly exposing yourself to the language you will definitely improve your language skills.
Of course, watching movies in English is not the fastest way to learn new words. It is a great way to learn the language structure and some basic words, but if you want to learn new words fast then it requires a bit more effort. Glossaries are a common way to learn new words. After spending some time with a new glossary, it may seem like you can now handle all the words. The truth is you will most likely forget half the words the very next day. Since constancy is the key, what I like to do is I usually practice the same words for three days straight. That way the words will stick with you a lot better, and it is more likely that you will not forget these words ever again.
So, in conclusion, if you want to learn a new language, find a way to use that language constantly. It can be movies, books, gaming, or whatever interests you. If you can’t seem to find an activity, you can simply just think your thoughts in the language that you want to learn. I’ve found that quite useful, and I often have some of my thoughts in English.
It seems to be a common theme across a lot of young adults today learned English through the internet, which I find so amazing. I relate to your experience of being kind of forced to be exposed to English with no subtitles, so the only option is for your brain to start piecing things together. I also find the idea of thinking your thoughts in your target language. I hadn't even thought of it before but it seems very useful, so thank you for bringing that to my attention! I wish you the best of luck in your future language studies. :D

VastaaPoistaI like the fact that you explicitly mentioned in the conclusion about learning a language through something that interests you. I can say that it works most of the time. Learning through watching movies on Netflix can be an effective strategy, but it works for movie lovers. Similarly in other cases, the strategy would work in the best way if you find those interesting. Overall, the blog was a good one! Best of luck for the future studies.
VastaaPoistaYes, when I was preparing for the English exam, I needed to remember a large number of English words in a short time. So I didn't have time to repeat and memorize all the words, which also led me to forget them quickly. Besides, I also like improving my English proficiency through English movies very much.
VastaaPoistaI agree with you that watching movies may not be the fastest way to learn unfamiliar words. However, I would argue that movies can also help you learn more advanced vocabulary and not just basic words.
VastaaPoistaNice post! I liked your tip about repeating vocabulary for a few days a lot. The importance of constant exposure to the language is just a as important. Thanks for sharing this.
